A Different Pond

A Different Pond - Podcast

I’ve been watching a different pond,

In a garden many miles from mine,

It is larger and deeper,

Mature after years of care and love,

Knowledge I tap into.

The shape is different,

A kidney bean designed with precision,

Edged with fixed level stones overhanging,

And plant boxes full of colour.

An arched wooden bridge,

No longer safe to walk on,

But pretty to see,

Iris stand tall,

Dominating the space beyond the bridge,

Yellow and blue,

Green leaves reaching skyward,

Framing the curve.

There is a pond within the pond,

A shallow haven for newts and frogs,

Feathery bronze tree fronds sway above,

Blue flower stars dip their leaves,

Taste the water.

Deeper water reflects blue sky and scudding clouds,

Raindrop ripples,

Our curious faces peering in.

Lily leaves spread on the gently moving surface,

Pink and white perfect flowers open,

Tremble as fish nibble algae below,

Suck down food,

Swim in shoals of tiny orange streaks,

Meander in groups of two or three,

Frolic in the aerating weeds.

Something jumps,

The splash adding to the water’s song,

Pouring from a stone lady’s basin,

Bubbling from an unseen source,

Dripping.

Damsel flies emerge in iridescent blues,

Skip over the surface,

Find a mate,

Their cycle of life so short,

I am happy to appreciate them,

Watching a different pond.
